In Olean and throughout New York, there are inherent concerns when people in passenger vehicles are sharing the road with large trucks. Due to their sheer size, these vehicles can be intimidating on their own. Other factors can also be problematic including speeding, truckers being under the influence, drowsy driving, recklessness and more. This can result in auto accidents with injuries and fatalities. Those who have been involved in a truck crash and were injured or lost a loved one should be aware of their rights to recover compensation.
Numbers from 2018 to 2019 show no substantial change in truck fatalities
Statistics are important and the most recent numbers show that the fatality totals have remained static between 2018 and 2019. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were slightly more than 5,000 such deaths in both years. For all vehicles, there was a 2% reduction in fatalities. In 2018, there were 36,835; in 2019, there were 36,096. Along with these numbers, the NHTSA also released its preliminary statistics for 2020. Thus far, there were 8,870 road deaths in the second quarter of the year. This was 3.3% less than the same time in 2019.
A footnote to that is the drastic lessening in traffic because of the health situation still gripping the nation. For the first half of the year, there was a 16% reduction in traffic volume. With the health crisis, drivers are engaging in dangerous driving habits such as driving at excessive speeds and committing DUIs. A spokesperson for the NHTSA says that the agency is concerned about these issues and encourages drivers to follow the traffic laws to keep everyone safe.
After an accident, consulting with a legal professional is key
Any auto accident can spark major changes in a person’s life. From major medical expenses to the inability to work to needing long-term care, it is a challenge that can affect anyone without warning. If it is a crash with a truck, there is a substantial chance of serious injury and death because of their overwhelming size. The combination of factors that are in place on the road can be the catalyst for auto accidents. Gathering evidence and knowing the steps necessary to file a claim can be essential. A law firm with experience in these situations may be able to help with a case.
